11th Annual Long Island Imagine Awards

By Community Service

The Long Island Imagine Awards was created as a way to showcase the nonprofit sector and all the good work that it does, as well as provide opportunities for deeper collaboration within the sector. The event acts as an opportunity to meet new people, discover new organizations doing business on Long Island, develop new relationships, and learn from the organizations that are being honored.

Long Island based nonprofits competed against each other in 6 categories – Arts & Culture; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Accessibility (DEIA); Innovation; Leadership Excellence; Rising Star; & Social Impact, with the winner in each category winning a $5,000 grant. In addition, the 24 finalists, 4 in each category, each received a professionally produced video, which was showcased the night of the event, and two free tickets to the event.

Little White Church Fire

By Community Service, Human Resources, News

SterlingRisk,

I am sure you heard about the church fire that happened Christmas Day, well that is my church. A little white church that Levitt donated land for the church to be built on 70 years ago and has served the community through their pumpkin patch and Christmas tree lot for many years, among many other things. It is devastating to see the destruction.

I know we have a very giving company and the little white church on Hempstead Turnpike could use some help to rebuild. Below is the link to donate. When on the page, you can also view the church website for more details on the church and the fire.

Below is what our Pastor said after surveying the damage.

— Linda Brady

The damage really is very extensive; worse than I initially thought. Burnt rafters, all chairs destroyed, smoke and water into everything including the Social Hall and pre-school area. Salvage is limited and we are awaiting the insurance adjuster.

On a brighter note, the Alter was saved as was the nativity scene. The firemen did some heroics for us. However, musical equipment, camera and computer for recording worship and going LIVE seems to be a total loss. The roof is terribly burnt, walls and other ceilings significantly damaged.

We are so saddened that this Holy place with such memories for so many is ruined.

— Blessings, Pastor Remo.

American Heart Association — Go Red for Women

By Community Service

The Long Island American Heart Association has announced that the Women of SterlingRisk will serve as honorees at its 17th Annual Go Red for Women Luncheon, scheduled for February 28, 2018, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY. A leading fundraising event for the American Heart Association, the Go Red for Women Luncheon brings together female leaders from throughout the community to help in the fight against heart disease and heighten awareness of heart issues facing women.

From mid 2017 to early 2018, SterlingRisk focused a majority of our community service work on the Go Red American Heart Association initiative. The SterlingRisk family was proudly represented by the Women of SterlingRisk at the Go Red Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Through our efforts we have raised over $50,000.00. Through various fundraising events (raffle baskets, walkathons, penny wars, pin and heart sales, potluck day, and tremendous support on personal donation pages from colleagues, families and friends we were able to collectively attain our goal.

Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research

By Announcements, Community Service

I would like to thank all my colleagues who contributed to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research. Due to everyone’s generosity my daughter Amanda won first place and was able to release a seal “Carrie Sue” back into the ocean. Carrie Sue was rescued off the beach on Long Island with an injured flipper back in April and released back into the ocean of Robert Moses Beach on Friday June 10th, 2016. I would especially like to thank David Sterling for his generosity in matching the donations made by the SterlingRisk Family. It was a very exciting and heartwarming evening, again I would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

Clothing Drive – Center for Transformative Change (CTC)

By Announcements, Community Service, Values

Good afternoon all,

The Community Service Subcommittee is excited to announce our first order of business!

The INN is proud to announce the highly anticipated launch of the Center for Transformative Change (CTC), a unique facility located immediately adjacent to the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen in Hempstead. CTC serves as a Resource Center to assist guests of the soup kitchen to improve their life circumstances and/or become self-sufficient. The facility also houses a Clothing Boutique, where guests can acquire free clothing, including business attire for interviews or a new job, and housewares. ALL GENTLY USED CLOTHING ITEMS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED, including suits, dresses, shirts, shoes, handbags, ties, and belts. They are also in need of youth khakis and navy polo type shirts, as Hempstead schools are now using a dress code that many parents are having trouble affording.

A collection box will be placed in the lobby of the third floor of the Woodbury office for donations, beginning on Tuesday the 16th through Friday the 26th. Susan Warhurst’s youth group will be sorting and hanging the clothing items on Saturday, February 27th and then bringing the donations to the INN. Thank you, Susan, for presenting SterlingRisk such a wonderful opportunity for generosity and for donating so much of your own time. You are truly living the values!

I encourage everyone to take a moment during this long holiday weekend to pull some items from your wardrobe for such a worthy cause. Thank you so much in advance for the Care & Respect you will be showing through your generous donations to those less fortunate in our community!

Cooking Kindness Served By SterlingRisk

By Community Service

On Saturday, November 21st, a group of SterlingRisk volunteers prepared dinner and dessert at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park. The Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children. The house that love built is for families whose children are receiving medical attention in local hospitals. It was an incredible experience and the gift of kindness and heart that was shared, could not be more fitting at a time of year we give thanks for all the blessings we have in our lives.

From the various fundraising efforts, the team raised $2,000.00. In addition, David Sterling has agreed to match the total funds raised, bringing the final total to $4,000.00.

From the “Mo’vers & Shakers” team, “Everyone should be proud of this success and it certainly showcases our values in response to such a good cause. It’s so inspiring to work with a group of people so caring and willing to help anyway they can to make this world a better place. Thank you all for everything.”
